TANTE BRUUN, ÅLESUND
Photos and Words by Taylor Simpson
Tucked away rather unexpectedly in the basement of the town's shopping center, Tante Bruun has perfected the cozy, quaint vibe we're looking for after a chilly and rainy day exploring the fjords.
On the menu are vegan salads with a variety of locally sourced ingredients, chicken and barbecue pork stuffed (and we mean stuffed) pita sandwiches, and a soup of the day. But perhaps the dessert bar is most memorable, with an array of pastries, scones, and cakes that are to die for. Do yourself a favor and order the Oreo cake- it comes topped with strawberry sauce, fresh blueberries, and a dash of powdered sugar.
While the food is delicious, the antique-meets-modern-scandinavian interior is what keeps you there long after you've finished your hot drink or sweet treat. At first glance, the cafe consists of a few colorful seating arrangements, but if you take a walk around you'll notice the labyrinth leading to room after room of koselig dining options. The rainy day will turn into a gloomy afternoon while you're perched reading Kinfolk and going up for your second piece of Oreo cheesecake.*
